I think anytime an addict is given a drug that's mind/mood altering, especially if it produces similar effects to what they were addicted to, can make it just that much harder for them. I do think he was adamant about not taking them in the last episode because of that, but I also believe part of it was that he knew he had to have his head straight if he stood a chance of saving himself.
