Part 2

Epilogue: Six months later

It was impossible for Aaron to miss the annoyance on his ex-wife's face when Jack wriggled out of her arms and ran across the yard shouting, "Penny Penny PENNY!"  He jumped into her outstretched arms and knocked her over; fortunately she was looking sexy in a pair of faded jeans and one of Aaron's old shirts, instead of the skirts she usually wore.  Aaron grinned as his son and his girlfriend wrestled around in the grass.

When Haley reached him, he turned his smile on her.  "Thanks for switching us weekends."  Penelope loved Halloween as much as Reid did, and they were planning to take Jack out trick-or-treating while Sean and Aaron stayed home to pass out candy.  Aaron had no objection to Halloween, but he was perfectly happy to let the two of them herd his energetic son from door to door.

"Sure.  You're bringing him back the evening of your birthday?"  Haley gave Sean an absent wave.

Aaron nodded.

"Great.  See you then."  She left without another word, and without another glance at Penelope.

Aaron made his way over to where his brother was helping Penelope to her feet.  He knew Haley thought he must have been cheating on her, but he didn't care any more.  He'd done his best as her husband, and he knew it probably made her feel better to view him as being just as guilty as she was in the break-up of their marriage.  And he was, just not in the way she thought.

It didn't matter.  That was the past.

Jack tugged Penelope's hand, and she picked him up.  Truthfully, he was getting a bit big to be carried all the time.  Penelope seemed to enjoy it, though, and Jack liked playing with the colored streaks and various decorations in her hair.

"Do we get to ride in Esther?" Jack exclaimed as Penelope and Sean walked over.

"You bet your sweet cheeks we do," she said, and he cheered and kissed her cheek.

Sean was laughing, his arm around Penelope.  "Haley's just as perky as ever," he said.  "Has she smiled in the last decade?"  Aaron frowned at Sean and Sean held up his hands.  "Maybe she just doesn't like me."

Penelope snorted.  "Oh, well, I can't understand why."

Aaron shook his head.  "Hey, no flirting with my brother," he teased.  "Jack will start wondering which of us you're dating."

"I know, it's Daddy!" Jack interjected, making them laugh.

"You ready to get into your costume?" Sean asked, grinning at Jack.

"Yes!" Jack squealed, and Penelope winced, but then just laughed quietly.  "I'm going to be a spaceman!  And I'm gonna wear a cape, and fight crime!"

Penelope started laughing a little louder.  "I thought you were going to be Frankenstein and be my date.  I've got my wig all ready!"

Jack giggled.  "I can be a spaceman Frankenstein!  With a cowboy hat!"

"Wow.  Multiple personalities," she said, grinning.

"It's Dave's fault for buying him the cowboy hat," Aaron said.  "Did you ask Uncle Sean what he's dressing up as?"

"What are you dressing as, Uncle Sean?" Jack asked, much louder than necessary.

Sean grinned.  "I'm gonna be a rock star."

Penelope glanced over and gave Sean a flirty look.  "How is that a costume?"

"It involves leather pants," Sean said, waggling his eyebrows.

"Okay, that's enough," Aaron said, looping an arm around Sean's neck and pulling him away from Penelope in a mock headlock.

Penelope laughed.  "Well, you know, if you'd buy yourself some leather pants, this wouldn't be an issue," she told Aaron.

"I am not getting leather pants," Aaron called over his shoulder, dragging Sean towards the house.

"You ought to," Sean muttered.  "Clearly she'd be very into that."

Aaron nudged him.

"Oh, honey, he couldn't keep up with everything I'm into," Penelope said, but her gaze on Aaron was warm.

"What are you talking about?" Jack asked.

"Drag racing," Penelope said, without any hesitation.

"What's drag racing?"

"When you drive your car really fast," she said.

"Do we get to drag race in Esther?!" Jack yelled, bouncing.

"No," Penelope said, grinning.  "But Uncle Sean said we could go in his car."

Aaron sighed.  "You two are corrupting my son," he complained, but he couldn't help loving that Penelope and Jack liked each other so much.  Not to mention the fact that Sean was coming to visit a little more often now that Aaron was 'not as uptight as he used to be'.  Aaron had a feeling his brother had a crush on Penelope, but he could deal with that for now.

"Somebody has to," Penelope said.

"C'we make mud pies again?" Jack asked.

"Mud pies?" he asked, laughing, and Penelope shot him a look.

"Hush," she said to Sean, then looked back at Jack.  "Jack, baby, it's not raining, and Daddy's home."

"Oh," Jack said, his eyes widening.  "Oh yeah."  He pressed his finger to his lips and gave Penelope a conspiring look.  "Shh."

Aaron gave Penelope a look that said, "you're busted", but he just shook his head.  "You're going trick-or-treating, remember?" he said to Jack, and glanced at Penelope.  "Have you heard from Spencer?"

"Uncle Spencer?  Is Uncle Spencer coming too?"

"Remember what I told you?"  Aaron let go of Sean and went to ruffle Jack's hair.  "Uncle Spencer and Penelope are going to take you trick-or-treating."

Jack cheered as if it was the first time he'd heard it, and Penelope laughed.  She set him down gently, then sat on the couch, where he climbed back into her lap.  Aaron barely got any attention sometimes when she was around, but he couldn't help but love how happy Penelope made Jack.

"You have to help me dress Spencer up, okay?" she said.

"Okay," Jack said.  "Can we ride in Shirley?"

Her eyebrows lifted.  "Shirley?"

"Spencer's car!" Jack exclaimed, and when Penelope just looked at him, he giggled.  "I told Spencer it had to have a name so it could be best friends with Esther, and he said no, so I gave it one anyway."

"You gave Spencer's car a girl's name?" Aaron said, hiding a smile.  "What if it's a boy?"

"No, it's a girl!  It's all pretty and girly."

"Just like Spencer," Sean muttered, and Aaron smacked him on the shoulder.

"Shh. Children repeat things," Aaron muttered back.  Thankfully, Jack was chattering to Penelope about how the cars ought to park next to each other all the time.

"But what if they don't like each other?" Penelope said.

"Of course they'll like each other," Jack said.  "They're old, like Daddy!"

"Hey," Aaron protested, scowling when Penelope and Sean burst out laughing.

"You know, calling Daddy old might just be call for tickling," Penelope threatened, and Jack shrieked happily and jumped down, running out of the room.  Penelope looked back at Sean.  "You've been drafted.  Go get 'im, tickle soldier."

Sean obediently let out a roar and headed out of the room after Jack.  Aaron shook his head, smiling.  "That was subtle," he murmured, going over to kiss her softly.

"Mmm," she hummed against his lips.  "Subtlety is not one of my strong points, mon cher."  She shifted to get on the couch backwards, so she could face him on her knees, then kissed him again, her hands sliding around to give his ass a firm grope.

"You're going to get us in trouble," he whispered against her lips.  All the same, he wrapped his arms around her and kissed her more enthusiastically.

"You love it," she accused, and squeezed again, and just then the doorbell rang.

"SPENCER!" Jack screamed from the other room, and Penelope whimpered and pulled away.  When Sean came in behind Jack, who made a beeline for the door, he looked between them, smirking.

Aaron just sighed and pulled Penelope to her feet, then draped an arm around her shoulders.  Spencer came in, looking awkward but happy the way he usually did around Jack.  Aaron had found his personal life blending more with the team after he and Penelope got together.  She said it was because the team was their family, and he couldn't think of any better reason.  It didn't really matter; it made him happy.

"Hi," Spencer said to Jack.  He was carrying a bag that undoubtedly held costumes and various other Halloween items, and Jack was shouting happily at him.  Spencer obviously had no idea that his car had been named Shirley, but was nodding and smiling anyway.

Penelope sighed dramatically.  "I get no love once Reid shows up."

Aaron glanced at her, his look accusing.  "Now you know how I feel."

She laughed and kissed him, which still made his cheeks heat when they weren't alone.

"All right, you three get in your costumes so I can take pictures before you go," Aaron instructed.  He was grateful that Spencer always just politely ignored the kissing, even if Sean was leering at him.

Penelope herded Jack and Spencer out of the room, and Sean sprawled on the couch.  "Have I mentioned how much I love your girlfriend?"

"Not in the last twenty minutes," Aaron replied.  He checked the batteries on the camera and snapped a shot of Sean looking comfortable.

"She's good for you.  You're not an asshole when she's around."

Aaron frowned at him, but he knew Sean only partly meant it.  They'd been learning to get along well before he and Penelope got together, but she had made a real effort to pull Aaron's brother into their lives, inviting Sean down for the Fourth of July cookout and random weekends with Jack.

Weekends-Without-Jack were reserved for things like Aaron being tied to the bed with a feather boa, but he was getting used to that, too.

It wasn't too much later that Penelope and Jack came downstairs, followed by Spencer.  Jack seemed to have vetoed the idea of being Frankenstein and had decided cowboy was good enough.  Penelope and Jack had done a great job of wrapping Spencer in gauze from head to toe, and he was beaming almost as widely as Jack from what Aaron could see of his face through his mummy get up.

Aaron had to wonder how Penelope's massive Bride of Frankenstein wig was even staying on, but was cut short in his musings when Jack walked over and held something up for him.  "Penny says you have to wear these," he said, opening his hands to reveal plastic bolts.

"You're making me be Frankenstein's monster?" Aaron asked, taking them.  He looked from Penelope to Spencer and back down at his son.  "I'm not even going."

"You have to!" Jack insisted.

Aaron held one up, glancing at Penelope.  "How do I make them stick?"

Penelope grinned.  "You just need one of your suits and something to stuff in the shoulders.  And no tie, of course.  If we put those on first, you'll just knock them off."

"I really don't need to dress up," Aaron said, brandishing the camera.  "I'm just here to take pictures."  He snapped a few of Jack hamming it up.

She sighed.  "Fine, but I think the kids you're handing candy out to would like it."  She pursed her lips at him, but didn't push it.  She looked down at Jack, then smiled again.  "We need a group picture!"

Aaron gave her a look, but he knew he was going to end up giving in.  He always did.  "Okay, Bride of Frankenstein, scoot in close to the mummy, but no snuggling."  He smiled faintly at the look on...well, what he could see of Spencer's face.  There was no way he was leaving Spencer out of the pictures.

Neither was Penelope, because when Spencer tried to slip away she grabbed him.  "Not so fast, my bandaged buddy."

"Garcia, I--"

"I nothing," she said, and squished him against her.  She looked at Aaron.  "And I can snuggle Spencer Platonically if I want."

Jack scrunched his nose.  "What's paten-on-ly?"

Aaron glared at Penelope, then sighed.  "If I dress up, will you snuggle me instead?"

Sean snorted and leaned down towards Jack.  "Platonically means snuggling someone like they're from Pluto.  Which Spencer is."

Jack giggled.

Garcia frowned, then reached over and thwapped Sean hard across the back of the head.

"Ow!" he complained, but she just looked at Jack.

"Platonically means like friends."

Spencer just held his hands up in mock surrender.  "I don't really need to be snuggled by anyone."

Aaron laughed and took some pictures, then Penelope waved for him to come get in the pictures.

"That thing has a timer, doesn't it?" she said.  "Get in here with us."

"This is the weirdest family picture ever," Sean said, but he picked up Jack and stood next to Spencer.  Aaron got between Penelope and Spencer, putting an arm around Spencer's shoulders and then smiling as Penelope snuggled up against him.

"Best family picture of all family pictures, rock star stud brother of my favorite suit-clad man," Penelope corrected.

Aaron made a face at her, but couldn't help but smile at the way she was looking at him when he looked down at her.

"It'll blink three times, then flash," he told them quickly, and they all looked at the camera.

"Best family picture ever," she repeated to Aaron softly, and just before the flash went off, she kissed his cheek.

*glee* Penelope Garcia, you ROCKSTAR!

I always get a nerdy kind of excited whenever I see you two've posted something 'new'. This involves much flailing and subsonic squeeage. It's two of my very favorite characters doing something new and exciting (with each other, even!)

I love how this managed to be lighthearted and fun - even with the angst and Penelope's very obvious self-confidence issues. That you showed Aaron with similar issues made sense.

AND SHIRLEY!!! Oh, Jack. Never change. *draws hearts around Jack and Shirley*

Also: Sean! Words can't express how excited I get whenever his obnoxious face makes an appearance. <333

*squee* You two write the most AMAZING stories! *squee*

I have a huge grin on my face after reading this. Everyone was so perfect -- I loved the disastrous first "date", Sean and Jack and the promise of Kook Aid hair, Rossi's plotting, Morgan's dismay, the dinner, the hot hot sex, and Halloween! Shirley and Ester, Reid as the mummy, the family photo -- the whole damn story makes me *squee* (and makes me incoherent, obviously).

Loved this!

I have to admit I was a little unsure about reading this story. I've only read a story with Hotch/Garcia as a couple before, it was pretty good but still had not read more of them. With that said, I am delighted to have read their story. It was really good, I love Garcia on the show, and I love the scenes she and Hotch have together and this story is great and you two wrote both of them in character, as always in your stories. Amazing work!!!

Thanks for sharing : )

Can't believe I haven't commented on this. Consider my head hanging in shame.

This is brilliant, and you should write more like it. I know all fans, regardless of pairing, says there isn't enough fic of the pairing in question, but there are some seriously obscure pairings I know of that have heaps more fic than Garcia/Hotch, often not nearly as well written and IC as this is.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Hotch and Garcia are like Manny and Ellie from Ice Age. In my world, Manny is the woolly mammoth version of a cross between Hotch (the mood, the eyes, and the sadness of losing his family) and Rossi (the Italian-American accent and the bull-headed behaviour). Ellie's like Garcia, crazy, tons of fun, and with little to no shame. While Hotch (and Manny) is no fun at all, but still loveable as all hell. As Sid puts it to Manny: 'She completes you!'<3

Honestly, I've only seen a couple other Hotch/Garcia fics. One was my own drabble, and the other I didn't read because I know I don't like the author's style. So yes, I agree that there really needs to be more of it!

Truly rare pairings can be amazing if done well. I'm really glad you think we did it well. Thank you! :)

Reader comment in two parts

Date: 2011-01-25 12:05 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] csad21.livejournal.com
I adore this story, really I do. More than I can say. :)

I'm not sure if anything I *can* say about this story will be news to you, or even if it'll do it remotely justice, but I feel the need to try anyway:

I haven't watched the show in a long time, and it was never a show I could watch regularly, what with all the triggery issues in it. Garcia and her quirkiness was a very big reason to watch it though, making me always wonder who she'll fluster next and how. (Just as I watched NCIS only because of Abby Scutio.) That and the team dynamics one sees in shows like this.

That being said, I don't have any sort of OTP in CM, I only care about the story being good enough to pull off whatever pairing or plot it is about. Which is, quite frankly, not an easy feat. I've lost count of the number of fics I've run across where my only reaction was: "No. Just... no. Urgk. Gah! Seriously?" Especially in Garcia/anyone pairings. It seems those mostly have two categories (The good MG ones are few, but they do exist and thus don't belong to either of these two categories, so credit where credit is due): Have Garcia's love interest fangirling over her to the point of nauseating the reader or alternately, indulging in writing Garcia so insecure about herself you have to wonder how she even gets up in the mornings and why she doesn't just kill herself, with all the pseudo-emo breakdowns she seems to go through hourly. Urgk.

Which is why I absolutely adore the picture of her you girls painted in this story. Especially her answer to Rossi: "It's not that much of a crisis of confidence. Jeeze, grossed out? Hives? What do you think I think of myself, Dave? I'm may not be perfect, but I'm not the Swamp Thing."

*Yes. Exactly.*

Rossi was exactly the way I think of him in this story. ("[T]he uncle that sneaks the kids beer and tells them dirty jokes." Yep, just about. *g*) Never you mind how priceless Morgan's reaction was. (And kudos for not bashing him! The rarity of that needs acknowledgement.) Or Sean immediately picking up the cue, and his ability to keep up with Garcia's flirting. And you wrote Jack in *such* an adorable way too! *melts*

Pairings in fandoms like CM are seldom viable, but that's what fanfic is for: making it look viable through the writer's sheer talent. Something you girls have plenty of.

I also adored the epilogue:

Jack going trick-or-treating with his Uncle Spence and Penny (who doesn't think Reid needs to be around kids more?), the family interactions that did not sound forced or contrived even for a moment. Best of all: Even though it was only a few lines, Haley came off perfectly well in this story too. I loved how those few lines said so much, how you managed to make her sound human without coming even close to the line of bashing her (something I'm coming to understand this fandom likes, or am I mistaken?), the hints it gave about what her interactions with Pen must be like.

And that subtle, oh so very subtle dig at her that I still did not perceive as bashing: Garcia calling the team family and integrating Reid and the rest into the Hotchner family's life. (It probably would have prolonged the marriage for a time if Haley had done that, but in the end, it would have failed, I think. I actually think she was patient far longer than most people would have been, in her stead.)

And all that should also make it very clear that I love the language you used in the story. It actually feels like you two were very careful in your word choices, like you really put some thought into using one word instead of another most of the time. Or at least it felt that way to me, reading this story, and *that* doesn't happen as often as I'd like, reading fanfic. So even if the word choices were less deliberate than I think, it still remains laudable, in my book.

Also, this may sound a bit petty, but I love the grammatical correctness here (aside from a few typos that weren't distracting) as well, which is something that's important to me. It makes for less distractions when reading, you know?

Hmm... what else is left to say? Nothing I can think of at the moment. Other than this:

This story is clearly, at least in my book, the best Hotchner/Garcia story written as yet. And I don't know whether to be annoyed at how it left me looking for other stories for this pairing or not, knowing there are few that come close to being half as good, even even fewer still that are really just as good. (I should know, I waded through ffnet's HG stories the very same day. *sigh* It may not be fair of me to say it like this, but I don't think it's hurtful to others if I don't name anyone. Besides, credit where credit is due and all that.)

Oh Lord, you two have ruined me for other Garcia/NOT!Morgan fics. :P
Seriously, SERIOUSLY one of the sweetest, most realistic portrayals of a kinda-friendship-with-HELLA-respect turning into more that I've EVER read, and the fact that it features these two POLAR opposites, and makes the contrasts WORK so damn well? AHHH I'M SUCH A HAPPY FANGIRL.
I'm definitely a n0ob in the CM fandom, and I gotta admit that I already have a giant soft spot for Hotch/Garcia, just because I'm SUCH a sucker for the Serious Broody One pairing up with the Human-Shaped Ball of Sunshine, especially when it WORKS. I LOVE how Hotch starts to loosen up because he just can't help it, and that Garcia just KNOWS WHAT SHE WANTS, THAT HBIC. :P
From what I can tell, if Hotch isn't slashed, he's always paired up with Prentiss in fanfic, and while that's certainly blazingly hot, I can't help but prefer him with Garcia, because when it's done right, it's everything my little shipper heart wants. :D
So thanks, ladies, for writing such awesomeness! This is absolutely going in my favs to re-read on a rainy day!!!

LOL Like Garcia/Morgan, I'm not a fan of Hotch/Prentiss either! *snickers* They are far too alike to work, in my head. It's funny that we can see and work with just seemingly "random" pairs like these and not get the "mainstream" one, huh?

Thanks so much!

Hotch/Garcia

I am a slasher at heart but for Criminal Minds I adore the pairing of Hotch and Garcia. They are so so good for each other! Garcia brings Aaron out of his darkness. I thoroughly enjoyed your story but my brain had to bring on the slash. I have not written anything in ages but I hope you don't mind a slashy comment fic. Sean and Spencer just screamed out for their own little story line. Apologies in advanced for the grammar errors.

I hope this works I have no idea how to use Livejournal I keep saying I'm going to start using it but then life gets in the way.

Spencer and Jack were discussing Esther and the newly monikered Shirley as they walked towards the next house. Spencer had asked why the car was named Shirley instead of Edgar which is a discussion they had the last time they discussed the old car.

“It's all pretty and girly. Like you Uncle Spencer!”

Reid looked down at the small cowboy then up at a blushing Bride of Frankenstein. He raised a gauze covered eyebrow at her and chucked he had never seen her blush before.

“It was Sean.”

Spencer rolled his eyes behind the gauze and followed Jack up the neighbors porch.

Two men lay entangled on the couch kissing lazily......

“Mmmm, I don't know if should be kissing you.”

“But I like kissing you.”

“Yes, but I'm starting to think Hotch is right and you have a crush on Garcia.”

“Well, maybe a small one. She's an amazing woman & the best thing that ever happened to Aaron.

“Mmm...well if you attracted to her and women in general we should stop what we are doing.”

Spencer sat up a bit, “Are you sure you don't need someone more...feminine?” He started yanking on the disheveled gauze around his body and stretched out in his boxer briefs on the couch.

Sean sat up and stared at the man he was straddling. Hair in disarray, gauze mostly off, sinewy body, and beautiful kiss swollen lips...he looked so sexy spread out on the coach.

“Nope. I like guys. Tall, kiss, slender, kiss, genius guys, deep kiss, gun carrying FBI guys, small kiss on the lips. Beautiful, intelligent, hiding a model's body under geeky clothes kinda guy.”

After a long intense kiss Sean settled comfortably on Spencer's lap, “Spencer, you are the bisexual in this relationship. You are the one that finds women attractive. I am gay.”

“Yes, but according to Cowboy Jack I'm pretty and girly.”

Sean's mouth stopped mid-nibble on the other man's ear. He sat up and looked and his lover.

“Oh.”

“Oh.”

Sean leaned down to place his forehead against Spencer's and gave him a quick kiss.

“I need to tell Aaron I'm gay.”

“What's that have to do with me being girly.”

“Well, if you'd been there already as my boyfriend I would have never said that.”

“You see me as girl? I'm a man Sean...I like being a man.”

“I really like you being a man. Your a beautiful man....not girlish at all...I don't always think when I speak you know that. And I really wanted to see you and then you went up stairs with Penny and Jack and then you left with them and left me alone with Aaron. I just wanted to be with you.”

“You are such a sap.”

“I just wanted to hug you.”

“Like I was from Pluto?”

“Penny was snuggling my man!”

Spencer laughed and kissed his boyfriend, “You really are girly.”

“I really need to tell Aaron that I'm gay. Then he'll stop worrying about me stealing Penny & then you can tell him we are dating.”

“Why me? He's your brother?”

“He's your boss?”

“You called me girly.”

“Pleeeeeease. It will be hard enough telling him I'm gay.”

“Hotch will not react in a negative manner. He'll be relieved that your in a stable relationship.”

“Please baby.”

“You called me GIRLY!”
