Summary: Dave and Spencer try to deal with the immediate aftermath of "Minimal Loss". They end up dealing with it together.
Part One, Part Two
Dave was glad the team had a weekend to recover before moving on to the next case. He called his cousin and got the name of a good mechanic in the area, and they got Spencer's car to the shop. He'd been tempted to invite Spencer to stay the weekend at his house, but he had a feeling Spencer needed time to deal with what had happened. Instead, Dave had dropped him off at his apartment, given him a lingering kiss in the parking lot, and murmured that he would see him Monday morning.
He'd arrived at work extra early Monday and left a single red rose across Spencer's keyboard, gambling that Spencer would be early himself. It wasn't going to be possible to hide their relationship from the others, anyway, and he wanted Spencer to know first of all that he was serious, and second of all that he didn't care who knew how he felt about Spencer.
Of course, it helped that he was pretty sure at least Hotch and possibly Emily already knew.
Spencer spent the majority of the weekend trying not to think about what had happened with Dave. He knew if he did, he would think it to death--think it into the ground until he was terrified and felt pressured. Of course, the not thinking about it didn't exactly work, but he at least managed not to drive himself crazy with it.
When he got back to work on Monday, he was relaxed and determined to act as he usually did, and he thought he could do it easily. Except when he got there to find a rose on his keyboard, it sort of ruined his cool. His eyebrows lifted in shock and appreciation, and a smile spread across his face before he could stop it. He bit his lip and tried to control it, then glanced around the bullpen to see if anyone was there before he turned to look up at Dave's window. He couldn't help grinning at Dave a moment before he sat down and tried to decide what to do.
He considered leaving it on his desk, just pushing it aside... but then Morgan walked through the glass doors and he hastily threw it in his drawer and tried to look natural.
Dave couldn't help laughing when he saw Spencer hiding the rose in his desk. Of course, Spencer, not Dave, would be the one who had to deal with Morgan's ribbing, so he didn't blame him. The expression on Spencer's face when he'd first seen the rose had been enough to warm Dave for hours, anyway.
Around noon, he headed out of his office and paused by Spencer's desk. "Got plans for lunch?" he asked, his voice casual.
Spencer glanced up at Dave. God, this was going to be harder than he thought it would be, especially if Dave kept bringing him roses and asking him to lunch. He darted a glance at Morgan again, then looked back up and cleared his throat. "No, not really. I didn't. Do I now?" he asked, his lips pulling into a faint smile. He could lie to an unsub without blinking, but he could already tell he was going to be shit at keeping this a secret.
Dave nodded toward the door. "Sure, come on. I know a place with good coffee and sandwiches." He glanced over at Morgan, gambling to make it look casual. "Derek? Join us?"
Morgan looked up, paused, then shook his head. "Thanks, man, but I've got to teach a class in about an hour."
Dave nodded and smiled at Spencer.
Spencer actually felt himself relax when Dave asked Morgan to join them, and then relaxed more when Morgan said no. Spencer nodded and stood, following Dave to the elevator. He waited until they were inside, then smiled at Dave. "Thanks. For the rose. It's, ah, going to die in my desk," he said apologetically. "I can't figure out how to get it out of here without either crushing it in my bag or having someone notice." He hoped Dave understood why he was nervous about people finding out, especially so soon.
Dave's smile widened. "You saw it," he said. "You know it's there. It's done its job." He put his hands in his pockets and let his gaze trace over Spencer's face. "We're okay, right?"
Spencer's brows drew together. "Why wouldn't we be?" he murmured, his heart giving an unexpected jolt.
Dave shrugged. "You've had time for second thoughts. I just want to make sure." He lifted one hand and brushed his thumb against Spencer's jaw. "I want you to be happy."
Spencer felt warm, and he leaned over to kiss Dave, his lips soft and teasing. "I know," he murmured.
"Mmm." The kiss was too short, as they pulled apart when the elevator slowed. "Good." Dave led the way to his car when they left the building, and in a short time they were settling in for lunch. "Having a good morning?"
Spencer smiled and slid his foot under the table to touch Dave's. "Yeah. Someone left me a rose on my keyboard," he murmured. "I think it was Hotch," he teased.
"Hm, I might have to have a talk with him," Dave said, giving Spencer a mock glower. "Tell him hands off my genius." His lips quirked.
Spencer laughed, louder than he should have, and then swallowed it when the waitress came back with his coffee. He grabbed four packets of sugar and grinned at Dave. "I wouldn't worry, really. I have my eyes on someone else."
Dave raised his eyebrows and settled back in his chair. "I hope it's someone I know."
Spencer licked his lips and looked down at his cup as he added the sugar. He slipped his foot casually up the booth until he let it rest there between Dave's knees without looking up. "You might."
Dave's eyes widened and he gave Spencer a stern look. "Good to hear it. Behave yourself." He pressed his knees together against Spencer's foot.
Spencer breathed a tiny laugh and looked up at Dave innocently. "What?" he said quietly. "Mister I'm-going-to-leave-roses-on-my-boyfriend's-desk-at-work-when-we-could-be-fired-for-fraternization have something to say?"
Dave smirked at him, though the casual way Spencer called himself Dave's boyfriend was both exciting and sweet. "There's a slight difference between the two. And anyway, you know as well as I do that we won't be able to hide this long, if at all."
Spencer's smile faded slightly, but he tried to push his foot farther into the booth anyway. "I know." He sighed and sipped his coffee. "Do you think Hotch is going to be mad?"
Dave shrugged and twitched, clamping his knees tighter. "I don't think so, as long as it doesn't affect our work. Hell, so far I don't think it's affected mine, no matter how tempted I've been." If I could leave you in there with Cyrus, I can do anything I have to, he thought.
Spencer nodded slowly, thoughtfully, then wiggled his foot between Dave's knees and murmured, "You're going to have to work on this. I'm well overdue a regular outlet."
Dave's eyebrows rose again and he laughed. "Not in public, you're not," he murmured, but his hand crept under the table to stroke Spencer's ankle. "Behave yourself."
Spencer sucked in a breath, enjoying the touch. "No fun," he said, pouting. Of course, if Dave ever actually called his bluff and upped the ante, Spencer would more than likely panic.
"Hmm," Dave said, working Spencer's sock down so his thumb could touch bare skin. "No fun at all?"
"None," Spencer said, grinning at the slide of Dave's fingers over his ankle. "And I dare you to prove me different when I come over tonight." His lips quirked to the side, and then he realized what he said. He coughed and took a sip of his coffee. "That is, if you want me to come over."
Dave smirked at him, both pleased and amused by the way Spencer had just invited himself over. "Of course I do," he said. "I enjoy time spent in your company."
Time spent in your company. Spencer didn't think Dave would appreciate that Spencer was charmed by the way that sounded, the way he liked the somewhat old-fashioned ring to those words. "Good," he murmured.
Dave's smirk smoothed out into a genuine smile and he leaned forward, watching Spencer's face. "I invited you into my life. I'm not going to kick you out now." It was strange feeling like this again. He knew he liked being in a relationship, but it had been a long time since he felt so excited by someone. He felt younger than he had any right to.
"Not yet," Spencer whispered, holding Dave's gaze, his own amused. "Not until I've bossed you around too much." He glanced around the restaurant, then gambled that Dave wouldn't mind public affection, considering he'd all but announced their relationship this morning. He reached across the table and closed his fingers, hot from his mug, around Dave's hand.
"Mmm, yes, you are incredibly bossy," Dave said, curling his fingers around Spencer's. "Maybe that's something I like about you."
Spencer laughed softly, but his entire body heated up at the way Dave held his hand back without reservation. God, he was holding Dave's hand in public. He squeezed tighter and was silent for a moment, then he licked his lips. "Hmm... tell me something. Anything. Something no one else knows."
Surprised, Dave studied him thoughtfully. He sipped his coffee, then said, "I secretly like the Bee Gees."
Spencer's brows drew together, but his eyes narrowed in amusement anyway. "Doesn't everyone?"
Dave laughed and squeezed Spencer's hand. "A serious answer to that question takes some thought," he said after a moment. He tilted his head and gazed idly out the window. He took another sip of coffee, then murmured, "I was scared of you."
The amusement of Spencer's face slipped off fast at the shock of Dave's words. Spencer just stared at him a moment, blinking and letting his mouth fall open. Scared of me?! Dave had said before that everyone though he was 'unassuming and polite'. And he was... most of the time. After a moment, he managed to swallow and stammer, "Why?"
Dave smiled faintly. "You're a young, beautiful genius. You've made some people sit up and take notice, both in the bureau and in some of the other professional circles. You have expertise in a good two dozen fields, you've published articles in how many journals now? Frankly, I was a little intimidated by you." He looked down at their joined hands, his smile widening. "Of course, I still wanted to meet you."
Spencer was still staring at Dave as if he'd grown a second head, and he knew it... but he couldn't stop. Dave had a point about most of that, but none of it was anything particularly special to Spencer, just more of the same. He leaned in after a moment and tried to catch Dave's gaze. "But you're David Rossi."
That earned him a snort of laughter. Dave leaned forward, shaking his head. "And you're Doctor Spencer Reid," he countered. "All right, maybe I did it first. But who's to say Doctor Reid won't do it better and smarter? He probably will. And eventually David Rossi is going to have to accept the fact that he's a relic."
Spencer pursed his lips and sat back in his seat. Dave didn't sound particularly upset, but Spencer still didn't really like what he was saying. "Shut up," he said gently, and took a sip of his coffee. "I don't like this game anymore," he added.
Dave shrugged. "You started it," he said mildly. "You know, I've come to terms with this situation. It helps that you're sexy and interesting."
Spencer gave Dave a look. "Come to terms with it?" He pulled his hand back to cross it over himself. "You're insane, and I'm not listening to you anymore." He couldn't help the way his lips wanted to quirk up, though. He was serious, but he knew how he sounded, at least.
"Sulking now? Hm. You might turn out to be more of a handful than I expected," Dave said, grinning. "I like a good challenge."
Spencer finally put his mug down and looked at Dave seriously. "I have no desire to take anyone's place, or overshadow you, or... I don't want to be famous. I've had enough of people staring at me over my lifetime. I hate walking into a room with you, to be honest, so you just keep being David Rossi, famous profiler and author, and I'll keep standing in your shadow. I like it there."
Dave snorted. "Okay, seriously? You will eventually be better than I am. That's a fact. You're already smarter, and you're working on gaining the life experience. Another fact? I only briefly thought you were out to make a name for yourself, and that was before I met you." He shook his head, smiling. "Spence, the first time I saw you, you had a Frankenstein head and a noose around your neck. It sort of downplayed the intimidation factor." He reached across the table and caught Spencer's hand in his own again.
Spencer still wanted to argue, but then Dave called him Spence, and finished with that, and took his hand again. He looked down at the table, then brushed a stray lock of hair behind his ear, smiling. "I thought I got that head off before you saw me."
Dave gave him a look. "The BAU has glass doors. Fortunately for you, I saw you before Strauss did." He grinned.
Spencer shook his head, but his smile grew. "And it was at that moment, you knew you wanted me," he said ironically.
"It was at that moment," Dave agreed solemnly. "I was smitten from the beginning. I was helpless against you and your Frankenstein head."
Spencer's smile turned into a grin, and he looked back at Dave, amused. "I still have it. I could bring it over tonight," he said, then wiggled his foot between Dave's knees again.
"Not necessary, I've come to appreciate you for who you really are," Dave said, grinning back at him. He leaned forward and lowered his voice. "You're incredibly gorgeous, you know that, right? It's taking all my willpower not to drag you across the table and kiss you in front of all these people."
A flash of warmth went through Spencer, and his gaze heated, even as he knew he was blushing. "Nnn, you kissed me in my parking lot Saturday."
"My truck is a little more private than the middle of a diner," Dave said, liking the way Spencer's demeanor had changed in response to his words. "But if you won't object..."
Spencer's eyes widened. "No, I wasn't... encouraging you." He swallowed. "I wouldn't stop you, but..."
Dave tugged lightly on Spencer's hand, pretending he was going to do it, but then he relented. "Don't worry, I won't kiss you in the middle of the diner," he murmured. "And it has nothing to do with the fact that we're both men or that we work together," he added after a moment. "I wouldn't have kissed any of my wives in the middle of a diner, either. People are here to eat, not watch displays of affection."
Spencer smiled, relieved, then squeezed Dave's hand. "But you want to?"
"Yes. Can you honestly doubt that?" Dave held Spencer's gaze.
"I just wanted to hear it again," Spencer said, and smiled.
Dave shook his head, amused. "You can hear it as often as you like."
Spencer took a sip of his coffee, watching Dave over the rim of his cup. "You can kiss me in the parking lot."
Dave laughed. "Thank you, Doctor Reid. Finish your coffee quickly, then."
Spencer grinned and made a show of downing the last few sips in his mug.
Dave pulled out his wallet and left more than enough to cover their meal and the tip, then stood, watching Spencer expectantly. "After you," he murmured.
Spencer stood and took Dave's hand, tugging him gently out of the restaurant. It felt silly to be excited about kissing Dave after what had happened over the weekend, but when he wasn't thinking too hard about this, when he wasn't worrying about it, everything about this was exciting. "This is dangerous," he murmured.
"Dangerous?" Dave pressed Spencer gently against the side of his truck, smiling up at him. "That isn't the first word I'd have used to describe it."
"Mmm," Spencer hummed, looking at Dave and suppressing the little shiver at the way he was pinned between the car and Dave. He reached up and brushed his fingertips through Dave's hair. "God, we're really not going to be able to hide this," he murmured.
Dave squinted at him. "I think that was my point several hours ago," he said, and kissed Spencer tenderly.
Spencer laughed, but it got swallowed in their kiss, and his slid his fingers into Dave's hair more, deepening it. "I know," he breathed when they pulled apart. "I'm still trying... this will probably get weird." He kissed Dave again anyway.
"Contrary to popular opinion, I am capable of being patient, if there's something worthwhile at the end of the wait," Dave said, and brushed his lips against Spencer's. "If you need time to get used to this..."
"I like this," Spencer said, and then turned to glare at someone walking by that decided to stare at them. After a moment he pursed his lips and looked back at Dave.
Dave laughed faintly. "You know, we're going to get that," he said, jerking his head after the person. "Since we're both men and I'm nearly twice your age." He gave Spencer a smile. "Ignoring people like that works the same way as ignoring the people who stare when I walk into a field office."
"It's not exactly the same," Spencer said. Why did he feel like he needed to protect this? He let the frown on his face fade slowly, mostly because Dave was smiling at him.
"Well, it's not that different," Dave murmured. He kissed Spencer again. "You know, you might be right. This could be dangerous."
"It could," Spencer agreed. "It's completely different. People look at you because they admire you, or because they think you're great. And you are. That," he said, gesturing where the person just was, "is homophobic, ageist, insulting, and stupid."
Dave raised his eyebrows. "Or maybe just curious," he pointed out. "I mean, he didn't call us names." He traced a finger along Spencer's jaw. "What I meant, though, was that this is proving dangerous to my work ethic. I suddenly want to skip work and drag you home to fuck me."
Spencer sucked in a breath, and his cock twitched with interest, even if Dave's tone was casual. He licked his lips and swallowed. "I get to fuck you?"
"Oh, well, I thought you might want to give it a try," Dave said, shrugging. "You don't have to." He gave Spencer a look from under half-lowered eyelids.
"No, I want to," Spencer whispered, breathless. He somehow just never thought Dave would... well, bottom. "We need to stop talking about this, or I'm going to have a slight problem."
"Ah, youth," Dave said, and kissed him firmly. "Fine, let's be virtuous and go back to work."
Spencer nodded, and pulled Dave back for another kiss when he pulled away, then whispered against his lips. "Okay. As long as we can be anything but later tonight."

Date: 2008-10-24 04:40 am (UTC)I would say that your story also made me think that this was a hot pairing, but ya'll already know that I perv on these two together. ;) ... but, for serious? You DID make them really sexy in this fic ... and how hot is demanding!Reid? He wasn't overly pushy or out-of-character in the least, but he was assertive and I loved seeing that. Spencer-in-charge is one of my favorite flavors (after Spencer-being-tormented and Spencer-in-bed, but what can you do?)!
Anyways, this was AWESOME!!! Thanks you guys!!!

Date: 2008-10-24 09:14 pm (UTC)And nothing wrong with perving on them. We obviously do! Aw, and I'm so glad you found them hawt. Mmm, yay!
Thank you much! Glad you liked it!

Date: 2008-10-24 10:25 am (UTC)Spencer's brows drew together, but his eyes narrowed in amusement anyway. "Doesn't everyone?"
LOL So do I. Only I guess it's not a secret now hey!
"Coffee is not the answer to everything. Sometimes you just have to relax and enjoy feeling well-fucked."
That is awesome advice Spence, glad you listened to Rossi! (Although a morning coffee in bed right after some hawt sex with Rossi would totally make it even better. So go on Spence...you know you want too) ^_~
As always girls, this was brilliant! And so damn hot and sexy. Reid/Rossi ROWR
I totally need to see or should I say 'read' Spence top Dave. (Actually...wouldn't mind seeing it either) OMG I'm turning into a hornbag! LOL
I love their conversations and the romance and OMG the rose. Go Rossi! So sweet. The whole story was sweet.
I reckon you could write any pairing (or threesome) and they would all be awesome!
And now I'm off to clean the drool of my keyboard. *waves bye bye*

Date: 2008-10-24 09:17 pm (UTC)Mmm, I hadn't considered much Reid topping Dave. In my head, Dave is pretty much a top, but I think I could switch anyone at least once. ;)
Reckon? I was about to say you must be in Southern state, but then I remembered your an Aussie! Hee!
Thanks! :D

Date: 2008-10-25 02:58 am (UTC)Now I see him equally as top and bottom, sharing that role with his partner. More like an equal relationship. Maybe it's because I see now him as more assertive, confident and comfortable with himself.
And yes, that's my Aussie slang comin out! *g* Sometimes I have to watch what I'm saying/typing cause some words over here, other countries might not know what they mean or have a totally different meaning altogether which might be offensive and vice versa. Weird hey!

Date: 2008-10-25 03:07 am (UTC)LOL--Of on this side of the globe, "reckon" is a southern colloquialism; never hear it anywhere but in the south, and usually in people with stronger accents. *G* Sounds much better with an Aussie accent, I'm SURE. Hee! But now I have this weird American south-Aussie hybrid sound in my head for your voice. O.o

Date: 2008-10-25 03:25 am (UTC)That's what I love about all your fics, the characters are so realistic that I can actually hear their voices in my head when I read them.
And the smut is quite delightful as well ;)

Date: 2008-10-24 09:21 pm (UTC)I used to be only an occasional "first time" person, but with Reid it's almost turned into a kink. Almost every time I write him, he insists he's a virgin. Not that I can't see him other ways, of course, but... yeah. *griiin*
OMG translate pleeeeaase! There needs to be more of this pairing! <3
Thank you!
(and yes, pimping's awesome, actually. Thanks!)

I can so see the look on Rossi's face. Hee.
Okay, so now I have to admit that Reid and Rossi click. I'd kinda hoped ('cause really, did I need another pairing to be looking for?) that your first one was a fluke. *headdesk* This damn fandom is beginning to eat my brain. Thank God you've already said there should be more...

Date: 2008-10-26 02:03 am (UTC)To be a bit more coherent, I truly enjoyed that they were both adults in this. It would be problematic to be involved with someone whose training and inclination is to notice and analyze every action. I don't think I'd want to put up with that level of scrutiny, even if unconscious. Plus I have a first time thing and a virgin thing so add them together and hey there hi there.
I can see them both being versatile, I cannot imagine Rossi having issues about his masculinity and Reid would want the empirical knowledge.

Date: 2008-10-26 02:14 am (UTC)Not such a platonic thing, in my case, but I definitely agree. *G*
I think, honestly, that most people who know Reid would expect that, but it's difficult to write, for one thing, and for another, I enjoy exploring the idea that Reid is more than his statistics. I think his lovers (or at least hope), if he was inclined to behave that way, would want to disabuse him of the notion that that is all he's good for as well.
And, I never realized I had such a kink for first time/virgin fic, but I keep just defaulting to that (or not-a-virgin-but-very-inexperienced Reid) every time I write him! :)
I see Reid as primarily a bottom, who tops on occasion (though the longer I write him, the toppier he gets ^_~). I have a hard time imagining Dave bottoming, but like I said above, I might just write it some day, and I definitely agree that Reid would WANT to know, even if he didn't get it often (or even more than once). I think anyone who knows him would know that too. :)

Date: 2008-12-03 03:55 am (UTC)This pairing is rapidly becoming one of my favorite ones. I couldn't see Reid with Gideon, or Gideon with anyone really, but I can see this. I really started seeing it around the time when Rossi backed up Reid when he was dealing the the militia man. ^_^
Hope to see more of this from the two of you. ^_^

This episode is one of my faves so that just makes me love the story even more.
"I don't like this game anymore," Reid is so adorable when he pouts! :D
Well I am off to read more favorites, as my brain just does not have the capability of following anything new tonight!
